Two Ferry Paintings by L.S. Lowry Lead Bonhams Modern British Art Sale

London – Two paintings of ferry boats by L. S. Lowry (1887-1976), lead Bonhams Modern British Art sale on Wednesday 20 November at New Bond Street, London. Both works, Ferry (estimate: £200,000 - 300,000) and Ferry Boat at Ballachulish (estimate: £200,000 - 300,000), come from the same private European collection and have not been seen on the market since the 1980s.

Ingram Reid, Bonhams Head of Sale, commented: "Passenger ferries proved a fruitful subject for Lowry. Strangers brought together for a common purpose always fascinated the artist – as his great scenes of crowds coming from the mills testify – and in these two paintings we find his much loved 'matchstick people' both gathering to board, and sailing away into his perfectly composed landscapes inspired by the Scottish lochs, and northern coastlines. Both of these works are fresh to the market, having remained in the same private collection for almost 40 years. We're also delighted to bring an important Pop work by Allen Jones to auction for the first time, having been in the collection of legendary designer Mary Quant."

Other highlights of the sale include:
