Highlights of September Asia Week New York at Bonhams

New York - Bonhams will present a stellar series of sales in celebration of Asia Week New York this September highlighted by an outstanding impression of the globally celebrated image The Great Wave, circa 1830-1831 by Katsushika Hokusai, Ming furniture from the collection of David and Nayda Utterberg, and property from The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Alan and Simone Hartman. The sales will include Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art and Snuff Bottles from the Robert and Florette Weiss Collection, sold to benefit the ICSBS, on September 16th, Classical and Modern Chinese Paintings on September 17, and Japanese & Korean Art and A Private Collection of Japanese Prints and Watercolors on September 18.

Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art
September 16

On September 16, the Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art sale will present more than 140 works including an outstanding collection of huanghuali furniture from the collection of David and Nayda Utterberg. The sale will also feature jades and ceramics from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, following the outstanding success of the museum's dedicated sale with Bonhams during Asia Week New York in March which achieved US$13 million and was a white glove sale. There will also be additional material from the collection of esteemed art and antique gallerists Alan and Simone Hartman whose inaugural sale of Impressionist and Asian art achieved a total of US$22.2 million in December 2023.

Highlights of the sale include:

• A fine and rare 16th/17th century huanghuali horseshoe back armchair, estimated at US$400,000 – 600,000.

• Hailing from the Utterberg collection is a rare and large 17th century huanghuali waisted corner-leg table with giant's arm braces and drawers, Tiaozhuo, estimated at US$300,000 – 500,000, as well as a fine and rare 17th century huanghuali three-shelf bookcase with drawers, jiage, estimated at US$200,000 – 300,000 and featured above.

• A very rare brown-splashed qingbai-glazed 'sheng player' ewer, Northern Song Dynasty, estimated at US$80,000 – 120,000.

• 'Er Long Xi Zhu': a rare shenhui-style lacquered guqin, late-Ming/early-Qing period, estimated at US$80,000 - 120,000.

The Chinese Art department will additionally present an online sale from September 20 – 30. Highlights of the sale include Horse, 1996, ink and color on paper, by Han Meilin (b. 1936), estimated at US$7,000 – 10,000, and a set of four figural paintings by Qian Huian (1833-1911), estimated at US$5,000 – 7,000, as well as a selection of Chinese ceramics and works of art.

The Robert and Florette Weiss Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles
September 16

The Robert and Florette Weiss Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles sold to benefit the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society will be offered on September 16. Formed in 1968, the Society was the first of its kind created to honor collectors and publish scholarly articles about snuff bottles. Highlighting the collection of 101 lots on offer is a fine Suzhou black, gray and white jade 'Collecting Winter Blossom' snuff bottle, 1740-1830, estimated at US$20,000 – 30,000, and a mixed chalky opaque and transparent agate 'Birds and Prunus Blossom' snuff bottle attributed to the Stevens Deer Master, Official School, 1750-1850, estimated at US$10,000 – 15,000. All lots will be offered without reserve.

Additional highlights include:

• An inscribed 18th century white jade snuff bottle, estimated at US$10,000 – 15,000.

• An Imperial watermelon-pink-overly opaque white 'Three Friends of Winter' bottle, Qianlong wheel-cut four-character mark and of the period, 1736-1795, estimated at US$8,000 – 12,000.

• A chalcedony agate 'Eagle, Bats and Feline Beast' snuff bottle attributed to the Stevens Deer Master, Official School, 1730-1850, estimated at US$8,000 – 12,000.

Classical and Modern Chinese Paintings
September 17

The Classical and Modern Chinese Paintings auction on September 17 celebrates nine centuries of this remarkable artform, with paintings by 20th century Chinese masters alongside rare treasures from the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Of particular note are fifteen paintings from the Robert and Lisa Kessler Collection, each of which were included in the Kessler's 2021-2023 exhibition at the Denver Art Museum, and include important examples by Qi Baishi (1864-1957), Xu Beihong (1895-1953), Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), and Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010). Among the highlights of the collection is Zhang Daqian's (1899-1983) Lady, 1929, estimated at US$200,000 – 300,000, as well as Lady in the Studio, dated 1945 by Fu Baoshi (1904-1965), estimated at US$200,000 – 300,000.

Additional sale highlights include:

• Two paintings attributed to Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322), the first Song of the Playing Fields, a scroll illustrating five aristocrats on horses suited for a leisurely hunt, but bearing a cautionary message, estimated at US$120,000 – 180,000, and Blue/Green Landscape with Travellers, a monumental representation of a Yuan Dynasty landscape painted on silk, estimated at US$70,000 – 120,000.

Monastery in the Autumn Mountains, 1950 by Wu Hufan (1894-1968), estimated at US$80,000 – 120,000.

Landscape, 1967, stunning abstract ink work, by Liu Kuo-sung (b. 1932), estimated at US$25,000 – 40,000.

• A rare quadriptych titled 1967-40 by Fong Chung-Ray (b. 1933), estimated at US$10,000 – 15,000.

Japanese & Korean Art
September 18

On September 18, Japanese & Korean Art will present a range of ceramics, inro, and paintings including 45 lots from the Alan and Simone Hartman Collection of Japanese Art. Highlighting the sale are a rare 19th century cobalt and copper decorated reticulated porcelain brush pot, Joseon Dynasty, estimated at US$50,000 – 70,000, and an important pair of early Kakiemon bottles, Arita ware, Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1660, estimated at US$40,000 – 60,000.

Additional highlights include:

• A massive Tomei-Jippō (Basse-Taile) and Moriage Cloisonné-Enamel Incense Burner by Kawaguchi Bunzaemon (1860-1912), Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century, estimated at US$40,000 – 60,000.

• A ōban tate-e print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) titled Ōhashi Atake no yūdachi (Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake) from the series Meisho Edo hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo), estimated at US$30,000 – 40,000.

• A very large 17th/18th century painted image of the Kongōkai Hachijūisson Mandara (Mandala of the 81 Deities of the Diamond World), Edo period (1615-1868) from the collection of textile designer Mary McFadden, estimated at US$10,000 – 15,000.

A Private Collection of Japanese Prints and Watercolors
September 18

An outstanding print of the globally celebrated image Kanagawa-oki nami-ura (Under the Wave off Kanagawa), commonly referred to as The Great Wave, circa 1830-1831 by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) is the highlight of A Private Collection of Japanese Prints and Watercolors to be offered on September 18. Estimated at US$700,000 – 900,000, The Great Wave is by far the most recognizable print from Hokusai's famous series, Fugaku sanjūrokkei (36 Views of Mount Fuji) and is often considered one of the greatest of all images in Japanese art. The collection also features additional prints by Hokusai including an additional ōban yoko-e print from the series entitled Sanka haku-u (White Rain Below the Mountain), estimated at US$100,000 – 150,000, and the complete series of ōban tate-e prints entitled Shokoku taki meguri (A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces), circa 1832, estimated at US$450,000 – 550,000.

Additional highlights of the sale include:

• An ōban tate-e woodblock print depicting the actor Nakayama Tomisaburō I in the role of Miyagino from the play Katakiuchi Noriaibanashi from 1794 by Tōshūsai Sharaku (active 1794-1795), estimated at US$80,000 – 120,000.

Tamaya no uchi Hanamurasaki, Sekiya, Teriya, circa 1790, a ōban tate-e woodblock print from the series Seirō nana komachi (Seven Komachi of the Pleasure Quarters) by Kitagawa Utamaro (1754-1806), estimated at US$80,000 – 120,000.

Matsuyamajō, Tonashimon (Tonashimon gate, Matsuyama Castle), circa 1953, a large watercolor on paper titled depicting cherry blossoms by the castle gate under a full moon by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), estimated at US$50,000 – 70,000.
