Los Angeles – Bonhams will stage its fifth annual Post-War & Contemporary Art sale timed to the renowned Frieze contemporary art fair in Los Angeles on March 1. For over two decades on the iconic Sunset Blvd, Bonhams' Los Angeles saleroom has presented an exquisite array of fine art and collectibles. This year's selection from the Post-War & Contemporary Art department will present global artists such as Banksy (b. 1974), Michael Elmgreen (b. 1961) and Ingar Dragset (b. 1969), Ugo Rondinone (b. 1964), Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe (b. 1990), as well as legendary California artists Wayne Thiebaud (1920 - 2021), Joe Goode (b. 1937), Sam Francis (1923 - 1994), RETNA (b. 1979), and Bernice Bing (1936 - 1998).
Among the highlights is The Leap, 1972 by Ernie Barnes, estimated at $300,000 - $600,000. An exemplary work by the artist, it captures the uniquely American and poetic spirit akin to Barnes' style. It portrays an elongated figure in solitude, stretching towards the fulfilment of a personal quest, and demonstrates Barnes' mastery in depicting the human spirit's aspirations.
Bernice Bing, Untitled, 1961, estimated at $30,000 – 50,000.
Bernice Bing, despite being overlooked during her lifetime, is now recognised as a pioneering figure in Northern California abstraction. Bonhams has presented numerous works by Bing and holds the auction world record for her painting. Untitled, 1961, estimated at $30,000 – 50,000, blends abstract expressionism and figuration as well as the exploration of light and dark by incorporating deep reds and blues into her compositions.
George Rickey's kinetic sculpture Two Planes Vertical-Diagonal II, 1968-69 with an estimate of $180,000 – 250,000, showcases the artist's mastery in creating movement through minimalist forms. Rickey's work, engaging with air currents and gravity, offers a silent yet dynamic exploration of space and motion, highlighting the interplay between art and the natural world.
Hernan Bas's painting Silver Dollar Wish (A Little Moby Dick In All of Us), 2003, estimated at $15,000 – 25,000, captures the essence of adolescence, desire, and the supernatural. Bas, who currently has a solo presentation at The Bass in Miami and is known for his intricate and evocative work, rich in historical and literary references, invites viewers into a world where narrative depth and visual beauty intertwine.
This year's sale also features a collaboration with HypeArt, an affiliate of the influential media platform HYPEBEAST, presenting "Instructions for a Memory Device." This curated section explores nostalgia and memory through innovative works like Yoko Ono's Cleaning Piece (1966/1988) (estimate: $18,000 – 25,000) and Glenn Akira Kaino's studies from 2013 (estimate: $3,000 – 5,000). These pieces reflect on the power of memory and the complexities of historical events.
