New York – On the evening of December 14, the Bonhams Impressionist & Modern and Asian Art departments closed the year with the exceptional sale of the landmark Alan and Simone Hartman Collection. The single-owner sale featured museum-quality Impressionist works together with an impressive array of Asian Art, achieving a total of $22.2 million by the end of the evening with 90% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.
"We are honoured to have been entrusted with the inaugural sale of the Alan and Simone Hartman Collection. The Hartmans' legacy as both dealers and patrons shows their unwavering commitment to extraordinary works of art," commented Bruno Vinciguerra, CEO of Bonhams and The Bonhams Network. "Tonight's sale demonstrates the collection's historical significance and marks another private collection that Bonhams has successfully brought to the world stage this year."
Achieving more than double its estimate and garnering a flurry of bids, the sale cover lot, Sisteron (1902) by Paul Signac (1863-1935), sold for $8.6 million. Also exceeding expectations was La Seine près de Giverny (1888) by Claude Monet (1840-1926), selling for over its estimate at $6.4 million. Alfred Sisley's (1839-1899) La Seine à Suresnes, from 1879, achieved $1.3 million.
Stefany Sekara Morris, Head of Impressionist and Modern, Bonhams, said, "The collection conveys the collecting expertise and discerning taste of Alan and Simone Hartman and we are not surprised that the works saw such fierce competition. We are honoured to see these treasures find new homes and are proud to end the year with exceptional results.
A large Ming gilt bronze figure of Weituo sold for $433,000, against an estimate of $60,000 and a rare and important bronze figure of a tiger from the Eastern Zhou Dynasty from 5th to 3rd century BC saw a frenzy of bids, soaring past its presale estimate of $10,000 to achieve $432,000. An 18th century fine and rare white jade vase from the 18th century sold for $242,000.
