London - New Bond Street sees a Cartier 'Pebble' or 'Baseball' as it's referred to in the USA, headline the Bonhams Fine Watches sale on 14 December. The distinctive design officially came to market in 1972, five years after the Crash made its debut in 1967. The 'Pebble' has recently seen a resurgence among horologists with a limited-edition 50th anniversary reissue, Bonhams has on offer the original timepiece.
The rare 18K gold Cartier 'Pebble' wristwatch offered is from the original owner, and was designed in the Cartier London workshop, circa 1972 making it an early model. This is a fine example of the wristwatches the London workshops began producing in the swinging Sixties. The 35mm design on offer showcases pure lines, precise shapes and proportions that are distinctly Cartier resulting in a simple design featuring a juxtaposition of a square with softened edges within a circle.
The 18k gold 'Pebble' manual wind wristwatch, features a cream diamond form dial, and black Roman numerals within a polished round case. It is believed that under ten examples of this size and colourway were produced making the 'Pebble' on offer a rare and collectable item. Offered with an estimate of £150,000 – 200,000.
Jonathan Darracott, Bonhams Global Head of Watches, said: "The Cartier 'Pebble' is a unique timepiece to come to auction in such a significant anniversary year. We are delighted to offer this alongside other exceptional items including the single owner collection of Heuers showing the design evolution over the years from the 1960's through to the eighties. We look forward to welcoming clients to view the exceptional horological selection."
