Collection of Edmund de Waal Ceramics to be Offered at Bonhams Design Sale

London – A collection of works by the contemporary English artist and potter Edmund de Waal leads Bonhams Design sale on 28 April at New Bond Street. Known for his installation of large porcelain vessels, de Waal's works have been installed at Tate Britain, Gagosian, The Fitzwilliam Museum, and The Kunsthistorisches Museum, and notable exhibitions include those at the Frick Collection and Royal Opera House. Of the 23 works by de Waal to be offered in the sale, his 2005 In a Dark Wood leads the collection, with an estimate of £15,000-£25,000. Estimates range from £1,500-£25,000.

The works, many of which were acquired by the present owner directly from the artist, come from a private Swiss collection and represent the period in the early 2000s during which de Waal was influenced by Modernism and the Bauhaus movement. De Waal later sought to unite these modes with East Asian traditions, incorporating techniques which originated in China's Shang dynasty. Other leading ceramics include Tall lidded jar, 2002, with an estimate of £10,000-£15,000, as well as Low cylinder, and Vessel, both created in 2000 and estimated at £5,000-£7,000 each.

The sale is led by a rare adjustable table lamp designed by Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956), the Austrian architect and designer who was one of the founders of the Vienna Succession and is known for designing the Palais Stoclet in Belgium for the financier Adolphe Stoclet, who decorated the Palace with paintings and mosaics commissioned by Gustav Klimt. The rare, silver-plated lamp, which is one of only two known examples, was executed in 1904, Wiener Werkstätte, Vienna, Austria, and has an estimate of £50,000-£70,000. The sale also features a work by renowned British designer Bernard Leach (1887-1979), large vase, with a 'Tree of Life' design, circa 1958. It was in Japan where Leach learnt from the master craftsman Soetsu Yanagi, before returning to the UK, setting Leach Pottery in St Ives. The vase has an estimate of £10,000-£15,000.

Included in the sale are works by important British designers, including Ernest Race, Tom Dixon, Lucie Rie, and Hans Coper. Lucie Rie's Flared bowl, circa 1970, glazed in matt white with a golden manganese lip, is characteristic of Rie's beloved modernist style. It has an estimate of £20,000-£30,000. Also included is an early and rare 'S' chair by Tom Dixon, circa 1988, which has an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.

Marcus McDonald, Director of 20th Design, commented: "The single owner collection of de Waals is a refined selection of works and conveys the remarkable sophistication of his vessel forms. The sale includes refined works by British designers, architects, manufacturers, either from the United Kingdom or strongly connected to it, which includes works by Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Ernest Race, Alvar Aalto, Ron Arad, and Tom Dixon. The Josef Hoffmann, an important and rare adjustable table lamp, is exemplary, combining Hoffmann's inimitable style and the Wiener Werkstätte's uncompromising production standards, creating not only a beautiful design but also an exceptional work of art too."
