New York – Highlighting a collection of 7 works by George Nakashima, the Important Conoid Dining Table from 1969 achieved $250,312, five times its pre-sale estimate, at Bonhams' Modern Decorative Art & Design sale on Tuesday (December 14, 2021), in New York. This work of impeccable provenance came from the private collection of former National Geographic Editor Bill Garrett, who collaborated directly with Nakashima on the design of the furniture, and had a pre-sale estimate of $50,000 - $70,000.
The sale was led by the spectacular performance of Dame Magdalene Odundo's Symmetrical Terracotta Piece which sold for $362,812 against a pre-sale estimate of $40,000 - $60,000. This fire red clay ceramic from 1990 is special to the Kenyan-born British artist as the first vase she sold in her first US show.
Benjamin Walker, Global Head of Modern Decorative Art & Design at Bonhams, said: "We are thrilled with the success of this exquisite collection, it included some of the best pieces of Nakashima to come on the market in years. Excitingly, several other pieces also soared past estimates including Morris' works and the sale-leading Symmetrical Terracotta Piece from Dame Magdalene Odundo, a favorite of the artist."
Other highlights of the sale include:
• Saggar Fired Vase, by Dame Magdalene Odundo. Sold for $200,312 against a pre-sale estimate of $80,000 - $120,000.
• Tiffany Studios Lily Pad Lamp (c.1900). Sold for $169,062.
• Artifact: Tusk and Skull by William Morris sold for more than triple its pre-sale estimate of $20,000 - $30,000 at $94,062.
