Ancient Glass Collection a Smash Hit At Bonhams Antiquities Sale

London - Part One of an important American collection of Ancient Glass was 90% sold at Bonhams New Bond Street's Antiquities Sale on 6 July. The collection - of which Part Two is on offer at Bonhams in November - encompasses the world of ancient glass from Greek core-formed vessels from the Eastern Mediterranean dating from 4th Century B.C. to Late Roman glass of 5th Century A.D. The glass collection made a total of £189,958 doubling its low estimate.

Overall, the 151-lot sale made a total of £792,499. It sold 84.48% by value, and 82.55% by lot.

The top lot in the sale was an Attic black-figure amphora (Type B) circa 540 B.C. which sold for £119,000 against an estimate of £50,000-70,000. The amphora is attributed to the Group E painters who were a group closely related to the work of the painter Exekias.

Head of Bonhams Antiquities Department, Francesca Hickin, said: "With so many shapes, colours and glass-making techniques represented, a collection such as this rarely comes to auction. To have the opportunity to own something with so much history is really special, so it comes as no surprise that these exceptional pieces achieved such wonderful results. We are thrilled with the sale as a whole, and in particular with the result of the top lot - the Attic black-figure amphora - that sold for £119,000, more than double its low estimate."
