Walter Ufer's Isleta, New Mexico led Bonhams first stand-alone Western Art sale on February 26 in Los Angeles, selling for a total of $125,313. The auction outcome was incredibly strong overall; 81% sold by lot and 91% sold by value with the sale's total coming to $925,569. The cast of Cyrus Dallin's Appeal to the Great Spirit was another notable sale highlight. This unique 22-inch bronze figure sold for $100,313, achieving more than double its initial low estimate of $50,000. The Sporting and Wildlife section of the auction performed exceptionally well, with 100% of lots sold and establishing new World Auction Records for artists Josef Franz Pallenberg and Mario Zamora Alcantara.
Bonhams Specialist in Western Art, Katherine Halligan said: "The successful outcome of our first stand-alone Western Art sale in Los Angeles is the result of our careful cultivation of a strong group of rare and important American art objects. It was gratifying to see strong results in the Sporting and Wildlife offerings included in the sale, particularly works included in The Berry B. Brooks Collection. Mario Zamora Alcantara's Kudu and Josef Franz Pallenberg's Square-Lipped Rhinoceros with Young One, Standing made World Auction Records for each artist. We are excited to continue to develop this category of art in our Western auctions."
Additional strong results were seen by William Dunton's Blackfeet Indians moving to the Buffalo Range, which sold for $75,313, Charles Marion Russell's 7-inch bronze Sleeping Thunder which realised $60,312 (more than doubling its initial high estimate of $30,000) and Antelope Hunter by Peter Hurd, which achieved $52,813.
