When Richard Simmons opened an exercise studio in Beverly Hills in 1974, a place where people of all shapes and sizes could be welcomed without judgement, to exercise in an environment of fun that prioritised mental, emotional, and physical well-being, he could not have known that he would change the wellness space forever. By focusing on the whole person, he was on his way to stardom. Following the success of The Richard Simmons Show, he purchased his home off Sunset Boulevard that would house his beautiful objects and furniture, lovingly collected and curated. Decorated by Simmons himself, the home became his "own little monastery, a haven away from the world."His creativity led to the creation of cookbooks, exercise products, workout programmes and videos, cruises, and so much more. Through it all, Richard continued to teach classes at his studio, Slimmons, and would personally answer fan mail, emails, and calls. His signature look of Dolfin striped shorts and a bedazzled tank top made him instantly recognisable and cemented his place in pop culture forever.A warm, loving, vivacious man, he changed countless lives for the better and gave the gift of acceptance, self-love and respect to so many; Bonhams is honoured to present the legacy of Richard Simmons and his unique collection to the world.
