Brazilian-born Ronaldo Macedo has lived and worked in Maui as a plein air painter for nearly forty years. He grew up as a teenager in California where he found a love for the outdoors as a river guide and surfer and developed artistic skills as a sign painter. Upon graduating from Cal State University, Long Beach with a degree in Illustration, he decided to make Maui his home in 1989. He apprenticed under the influential painter, surfer, and Lahaina Arts Society President George Allan, where he learned everything from stretching canvas to building frames to plein air techniques. Macedo founded the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational in 2006 and has participated in juried and invitational shows such as the Carmel Plein Air Festival and Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational over the last two decades. Macedo has been represented by Lahaina Galleries since 1994, and resides at Puamana, Lahaina.
According to the artist, the work depicts the view to shore from the Lahaina Harbor breakwall. This view was often painted by Macedo's mentor/teacher/ friend, George Allan who passed in 2024. The blue boat is the Whale Mist 2 and the building in the background was the historic Pioneer Inn lost in the August 2023 Maui fire.
