The first episode of Season 1 of Downton Abbey aired on 26th September 2010 to an approximate audience of 9.25 million. Written by Julian Fellowes and directed by Brian Percival, the first episode opens to the news of the sinking of the Titanic and the death of the heir to Downton, and the subsequent fallout for the characters both upstairs and downstairs.

The series garnered widespread acclaim and success, winning top awards at the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards, including: Outstanding Miniseries or Movie; Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special for Brian Percival; Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special for Julian Fellows; and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Maggie Smith. The series also won Outstanding Costume and Cinematography specifically for Episode One.
