A large Berlin cup and saucer depicting Beethoven, circa 1927

The grisaille portrait set in an oval gilt cartouche flanked by allegorical figures reaching laurel wreath and roses, his signature in blue to the base, the cup standing on three claw feet, the saucer with date 1827-1927 in gilding, picked out with blue concentric bands the cup 10cm high, sceptre marks in underglaze blue, KPM and orb mark in red, impressed numerals and painters marks, inscription "von 300 Stücken Nr. 155", (edition of 300, number 155) (2)

This cup was made in a limited edition of 300 examples to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the death of the great composer Ludwig van Beethoven (17 December 1770- 26 March 1827).
