A Greek terracotta pinax fragment
South Italy, circa 5th Century B.C.
Decorated in relief with a young seated Kore or woman, probably Persephone, the long hair dressed beneath a fillet, a cockerel presented to the seated figure in the outstretched hand of a now missing facing figure 10cm high

A pinax was a votive board, deposited in a santuaries, with cockerels often depicted in association with the cult of Kore-Persephone, both goddess of the Underworld and associated with love after her abduction and marriage to Hades. Young women often deposited pinakes as votive offerings to love and marriage.
