The "Rare Handcrafts" collection from Patek Philippes celebrates the art and mastery of enamel work in watchmaking. The Calatrava "Dom Robert" reference 5077G-110G-055 is a quintessential example of this rare and meticulously produced series, with a stunning Grisaille enamel dial depicting a bird motif inspired by the tapestry work of famed French Benedictine monk and painter Dom Robert. Born in 1907, Guy de Chaunac-Lanzac studied at the Jesuit College in Poitiers, before going on to the École nationale des arts décoratifs in Paris. Under the pseudonym of Dom Robert, his tapestry work explored elements of nature, and the beauty of their reality as timeless works of the heavenly creator. This was mostly depicted through the use of vibrant colors, and often mundane yet beautiful flora and fauna subject matter like the bird and plants depicted on the dial. The current lot, a brand-new limited-edition of just 6 pieces is an incredible example of and made enameling artistry and will be making its first time appearance at auction in this sale.
