Footnotes

Collection of The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburon, Naples, Florida.

N.B.
Little is known about the British painter who signed his works 'W.R. Waters'. Another painting by Waters was sold at Christie's, London, in 2023.

OVERALL CONDITION:
There is substantial retouch throughout the canvas, of what looks like varying ages. There are webs of retouch in the craquelure throughout the entire sky and throughout the ground, clothes, bodies, and shoes of the figures. The sky is the most heavily retouched area. There is green varnish covering the bodies and the landscape to the lower right corner.

There is stable craquelure throughout. There is minor frame abrasion along all four edges, with minimal pigment loss. There is a strip of white accretion along the lower left edge, approx. 10 cm. high. There is more white surface accretion near the lower right edge. There is a swash of blue surface accretion, likely pigment, near the upper right quadrant, approx. 4.5 cm.

The canvas has been lined and supported by a new stretcher. The painting could benefit from a gentle cleaning.
