Bonhams is delighted to collaborate with Champagne Barons de Rothschild to celebrate the release of the House's inaugural prestige cuvée: Le Grand Clos 2019.
The Champagne
Lot 1 offers collectors and connoisseurs a truly historic opportunity: the very first three numbered bottles of "Le Grand Clos 2019" - 0001, 0002, and 0003/1788 - each bearing the signature of one of the three barons present at the creation of the estate: Benjamin de Rothschild, Eric de Rothschild, and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild.
This exclusive sale marks the worldwide launch of this rare cuvée, the fruit of unique expertise and centuries-old heritage. The three bottles are presented in a unique oak box crafted for the occasion. "Le Grand Clos 2019" is the House's first single plot cuvée.
Le Grand Clos is above all the name of a place, a place steeped in history whose surrounding walls were erected over 200 years ago in the heart of the Vertus Premier Cru and the famous Côte des Blancs. At the gateway to the medieval village, this contiguous plot now shelters a few precious ares of vines, the first planting of which predates the First World War. For the first time in the history of this lieu-dit, the House has chosen to vinify them separately.
From this decision was born "Le Grand Clos," a unique and precious wine. While there are just under thirty Clos in Champagne, few cuvées are produced entirely on the plot from which they originate. Acquired in 2013 by the Rothschild family, this Clos now only delivers its precious bottles when they are deemed ready to leave the plot.
The Experience
This lot will also include an exclusive experience. The buyer of this lot will be invited in person in the new Barons de Rothschild Champagne winery in Vertus, accompanied by up to five other people of his/her choice. At this occasion, a tour of the winery, a private tasting, a lunch or dinner with a member of the Rothschild family, and an overnight stay in Champagne at a nearby hotel will be provided. Experience conditions:
- Fulfilment: This experience is being offered by, and will be fulfilled by, Barons de Rothschild
- Booking Period: The experience must be booked and completed from by December 31, 2026. Booking is subject to availability and must therefore be scheduled no less than 3 months in advance.
- Participation: The experience includes 2 days (1 night) in a hotel in Champagne, full board, as well as participation to a private winery tour and tasting, a lunch or dinner with a member of the Rothschild family for 6 persons (the buyer of the lot and 5 guests).
- Additional Costs: Any costs, expenses and/or arrangements not explicitly included in the experience are solely and exclusively the responsibility and at the expense of the buyer and the buyer's guests. For the avoidance of doubt, the following items are NOT included in the experience: airfare and ancillary transport to and from Champagne; travel documentation, including valid passport; travel disruptions (whether inbound to Champagne or outbound), irrespective of cause; insurance coverage or expenses of any kind, including with respect to travel, property, health, life, or any emergency medical needs.
- Transferability: This experience is not transferable. For the avoidance of doubt, the buyer of the lot may not assign, transfer, gift or resell the experience.
- No Refunds: This experience is non-refundable. The buyer of the lot is not eligible for a refund of any kind if the experience is booked and the buyer or guest is not appropriately prepared for travel, or not otherwise able to participate in any of the activities.
- Cancellation and Rescheduling: Any cancellations or rescheduling requests must be made at least 3 months prior to the scheduled experience date.
- Discretion: Barons de Rothschild reserves the right to modify elements of the experience with substantially similar elements and is not responsible for changes in schedule of any element of the experience that is beyond its reasonable control.
