Footnotes

The vendor states that this helmet was given to his great aunt Ethel-May Haddon Carter, MBE, by General Eisenhower, whom she was seconded to as his driver whilst serving in the  Women's RAF. According to Eisenhower, the helmet belonged to Captain 'Titus' Oates, who served in the regiment and later joined Scott's Tera Nova expedition to the South Pole, achieving renown for his act of self-sacrifice, wherein he walked into a blizzard, stating that he was "just going outside and may be some time". This allowed the party to continue on without him, as his poor health prevented him from going any further, and the rest of the party refused to leave him behind as he had initially requested
