Footnotes

The 72nd Regiment of Foot (The Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders) was established in 1778 in response to the British Army's need for more troops for the American War of Independence (1775-83). Kenneth Mackenzie, Earl of Seaforth, recruited from the western Highlands of Scotland and the regiment travelled as far afield as India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Mauritius and Canada.

In 1823 the regiment was re-named after Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany who was the commander-in-chief of the British Army and King George IV's brother.
