The present work is a rare engraving by George Townley Stubbs (1756-1815), after a painting of 1548 by Jacapo Bassano. The painting was acquired by the Duke of Bedford in the 18th century from William Beckford, novelist and art critic, and at that time was believed to be by Titian. The Duke of Bedford commissioned Stubbs to make an engraving of the picture which indeed attributes the painting to Titian. The original artwork now hangs in the Louvre.
The history of the Braccho Italiano, or Italian Pointer dates back to the Renaissance period in Italy, where it was highly prized by Italian nobility for its hunting prowess.
