Following a period of ill health in 1982, where Miles Davis lost movement in his hand due to a stroke, it was recommended that he take up drawing as a method of improving the recovery of his hand when he was not playing music. This began a long relationship with art that began as small sketches and developed into large colour drawings and canvases.
This sketch is rendered with a light, delicate touch, revealing Davis' deep appreciation for the human form. There are also subtle references to his African heritage within this artwork through the use of colour and stylisation of the form.
Provenance:
Soly by Jo. A Gelbard via Balmain Fine Arts Gallery, 7th April 2005, where purchased by the present owner.
