Alan Jay Lerner:
Alan Jay Lerner is celebrated for his enduring and engaging contributions to musical theatre, including 'My Fair Lady', 'Camelot', and 'Paint Your Wagon', among many others. His work is remembered for its distinctive blend of emotional depth and charm, which led to the creation of some of the most significant works in musical theatre for both stage and screen.

This lot represents a treasure trove of material amassed throughout Lerner's professional and personal life. Over the course of four decades, Lerner rubbed shoulders with some of the world's most iconic figures, many of whom became confidants and pen pals. This is reflected in the extensive collection of letters and telegrams:

Jackie Kennedy, writing on mourning stationery following the death of her husband, writes 'It was so touching to watch the expressions on the faces of all those present and it must have given you a warm and satisfying feeling to know you were bringing so much pleasure - to so many - that afternoon. I do thank you, more than I can ever say, Jackie'.

Katharine Hepburn's characteristically spirited correspondence, 'Those are gorgeous, those great lilies, and so are you.' Hepburn addresses one of her postcards to Lerner as 'My Monster.'

Ingrid Bergman writes to Lerner in beautiful cursive lines inviting Lerner and his wife to a surprise party for Lars Schmidt, 'I know it's a long way, but I want you to know how welcome you and your wife would be. Let me know if it's possible to this address or Théâtre Montparnasse, 31 rue de la Gaîté.' This letter is dated to May 13th 1967, during the time that Schmidt owned the theatre.

The personalities and relationships captured in this archive leap off the page, offering a remarkable insight into their lives and into Lerner's own.

Also included in the lot are scripts, awards and memorabilia. Of note is a volume of songs autographed by Irving Berlin, as well as Lerner's personal awards and certificates. Together, these pieces trace the extraordinary career of Alan Jay Lerner and his exceptional contribution to the arts.
