George Hardie:
George Hardie is a graphic designer and illustrator and is perhaps best known for his album cover art for design group Hipgnosis, with Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. Some of Hardie's most famous work includes Led Zeppelin's 1969 debut album, Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here, 10cc's Sheet Music and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis.
The imagery offered here appeared on the album as a sticker affixed to the black-coloured shrink-wrap that covered the album's cover imagery. It was inspired by the songs Welcome To The Machine and Have A Cigar, suggesting the use of a handshake as an often insincere or deceptive gesture. The mechanical hands also featured on the labels of vinyl album.
Hardie's artwork for Led Zeppelin's eponymous debut album sold for a world-record price of $325,000 in June 2020.
