This watercolor memorial picture is unusual for showing a solitary man in mourning. It is also unusual that the artist, Chloe Simpson, was not directly related to the Clemans family – these images are most often created by the wives, mothers, and daughters of the deceased.
Louisa P. Curtis (c. 1802-30) married Chester Clemans (1800-56) in Dudley, Massachusetts, on 17 May 1829. She died less than two years later, a mere two months after the death of their only child, Hannah. Chester did not remarry, but their names are absent from his own tomb at Mount Zion Cemetery in Webester, Massachusetts, where he died in 1857.
