Leng Joon Wong was born in China in 1947 and moved to Singapore at the age of 9, where he lived and studied; graduating from Singapore's Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in 1964. Five years later, he became a founding member of the Singapore Watercolour Society, whose work laid emphasis on topographical scenes of Southeast Asia and fast-disappearing urban landscapes. Several of the artists involved with the society were Chinese born migrants and their Western-influenced technique was dubbed by some critics as 'the Nanyang style'. Leng's subjects include attap buildings, street markets, traditional river craft and shophouses.
