SHACKLETON (ERNEST)
Footnotes
"MARSHALL SUFFERED GREATLY, BUT STUCK TO THE MARCH. HE NEVER COMPLAINS" - fine association copy of Shackleton's account of the Nimrod expedition, inscribed by Eric Marshall, the expedition's surgeon and cartographer with the shore party. He was a member of the party that made the first ascent of Mount Erebus, and also one of the Southern Party, led by Shackleton which attempted to reach the South Pole, reaching 88°23'S. "During the return journey, Marshall saved the lives of the party by struggling on to a food depot when the others were too exhausted to move" (SPRI, website).
Beneath his inscription Marshall has quoted a verse from Canadian poet Robert Service's poem 'The Call of the Wild':
"Let us probe the silent places/let us seek what luck betide us/Let us journey to a lonely land I know/There's a whisper on the night-wind/there's a star agleam to guide us/and the Wild is calling, calling - let us go!".
Provenance: W.T. Gardner, Lymington, Hants, stamp inside upper cover of volume 2.
