SHACKLETON (ERNEST)
Footnotes
PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY SHACKLETON TO WILLIAM DEDERICH, A MAJOR SPONSOR OF THE ENDURANCE EXPEDITION. Dederich (1872-1926), a German-born businessman settled in London, was introduced to Shackleton by the newspaper editor Ernest Perris. "He was successful, rich, and happened to be a polar enthusiast as well.. [and] was taken by Shackleton's personality. Shackleton soon became a regular visitor at Dederich's offices... Dederich would take him out to lunch... and always foot the bill" (Roland Huntford, Shackleton, 1985). Dederich, through his connections with the chemical industry, helped Shackleton with his aim to take dehydrated food on the expedition, and gave money for the expedition. On Shackleton's return Dederich appointed him a director of his firm, the Elstree Chemical Company.
Included with the lot is a very scarce menu, of which we can find no record, for a "Dinner given [for Shackleton] by Mr. William Dederich in the Queen's Room, Carlton Hotel, June 28th, 1917". Eight pages (including the stiff covers), the menu is illustrated with 9 photographs from the Expedition.
