Fuhrhop was born in Hamburg and came to Batavia in 1828 as a soldier in the 18th Infantry Division of the Dutch colonial army. He was involved in the conflict with the Javanese prince Dipa Negara, which ended in 1830. Eight years later he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the Engineering Corps, retiring in 1852 at the rank of captain.
