A Lakota (Sioux) buffalo hide bow case, quiver and bow

Each sleeve and the strap constructed of buffalo hide, with finely beaded box motif cuffs with fringed ends, indigo stroud trade cloth trim along the seams, tapering beaded tab drops with tin cone accents at the strap terminals, with sinew-backed bow and four iron-tipped arrows.
length of bowcase 39 1/2in; length as hung (excluding tabs and fringe) 27 1/2in; bow length 40 1/2in

Provenance
Collected by Thomas Mares in the late 1860s. Per family history, Mares was a meat hunter supplying the Union Pacific Railroad during construction across Nebraska and Wyoming. After his employment with the railroad ended, Mares emigrated to eastern Washington state.

Acquired from the Mares family in the late 1990s by Bruce Vanlandingham;
acquired from the above by the present owner in 2003.
