Footnotes

Double Gray Scramble builds on a painting format developed by Frank Stella in the late 1960s, evolving from his earlier Concentric Squares and Mitered Mazes series of 1962–63. In those earlier works, color and grayscale sequences operated independently, whereas here, they are combined in alternating bands that interrupt— or "scramble"— each other's order.
