'Sir Frederick Stern introduced this beautiful small tree via his famous garden in Sussex, from which it takes its name. Most people agree with Graham Thomas that it is a hybrid between M.sinensis and M.wilsonii, though some authorities list it as a form of the latter. I painted it at Plas Newydd on Anglesey.'
