The present lot is one of a number of court scenes that were executed by the artist in the early 1920s. In his introduction to the Arts Council Exhibition catalogue for the 1963 exhibition Malcolm Drummond, 1880-1945, Quentin Bell describes how the artist's work in this period 'follows nature with heroic tenacity'. As such, the present lot depicts a court scene with a commitment to realism that endows the scene with, in Quentin Bell's words, the 'implacable gravity of execution' that was typical of his work in that decade.
We are grateful to Richard Shone for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
