Provenance
The Estate of the Artist, and thence by descent to the previous owner
The present lot is a model for a possible sculpture, which was never cast in bronze. When working in his studio Denis Mitchell produced a series of 'ideas' or 'models' for future pieces, some of which were then used as the basis for a wooden pattern, from which the final sculpture was cast. Unlike his maquettes, which although smaller versions of larger works, are sculptures in their
own right, these 'models' were a way for the artist to experiment with form.
This model draws influences from 'Gew' (1960), and the form was later developed into 'Talland' (1966) and 'Tolgus' (1966).
We are grateful to the Artist's Estate for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.
