John Sydenham (1590-1648) was the son of the wealthy landowner Humphrey Sydenham whose seat was Combe at Dulverton, Somerset. The family descended from Roger de Arundel who came to England with William the Conqueror and their name, originally de Sydenham, was taken from the manor of Sydenham near Bridgwater. John married Margery Poulet of Hinton St George, Somerset, and died without male issue which may account for this portrait having descended through the Poulet (later Poulett) family.
