Captain Richard Pryce (d.1671), or Price, of Gunley (or Gwnlle), Montgomeryshire, eldest son of Edward Pryce, was a committed Parliamentarian and one of the most influential figures in Wales during the English Civil War. He played a key role in some of the most decisive instances in the campaign, including the siege of Ruthin Castle in 1646 and the destruction of Montgomery Castle in 1649. He was well supported by Oliver Cromwell and was made High Sheriff of Montgomery in 1651, which was probably when his portrait was painted. Unfortunately, his fortunes changed and during the Restoration in 1665 he was considered dangerous and an arrest warrant was issued. Rosamund was his second wife. For more information see W.R. Williams, The Parliamentary History of the Principality of Wales, Brecknock, 1895, pp.3-4.
