A larger version of the present composition, oil on panel, 52.8 x 37.1cm, is in the Ospedale di S. Maria della Scala, Siena. Rottgen, who dates the present work to the 1610s, also mentions another version, also on copper, approximately 51.4 x 40.5cm, that was in the Collection of the Duc d'Orleans, Paris, before 1729, and was engraved in reverse by Jacques Bouilliard in 1786 (see: Rottgen, ibid, pp. 374-5).

Turner, confirming the popularity of the subject matter, lists another two lost versions of the composition: one, also on copper, formerly in the Massimi Collection, Rome; and another, support unknown, painted for the 'Emperor'. He suggests that the present work may have been trimmed and originally extended upwards and to both sides, perhaps to reveal more detail of the grotesque fountain, as can be seen in the Bouilliard engraving (see: Turner, ibid, p. 713).
