Sale, Bonhams, London, 4 December 2013, lot 15, where purchased by the present owner

The present painting is one of numerous studio versions of this composition. There are two paintings which are considered to be fully autograph; one in the Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig, and the other in the John G. Johnson Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The Ecce Homo most probably formed part of a diptych with a Mater Dolorosa, as suggested by a copy by Simon de Châlons now in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (see: D. Alan Brown, Andrea Solario, Milan, 1987, p. 186, ill. 145).
