This portrait potentially represents Thomas Chay Beale, son of Thomas Chay Beale (c.1810-57) who went on to enjoy a successful career in Shanghai. Although often described as Thomas Beale's cousin, he is identified by Harriett Low as the latter's illegitimate son, 'educated in England, and visits the best society here' (entry for 27 March 1832). Another possible candidate is Daniel Beale the younger (1798-1827), Thomas Beale's nephew, who died in Macau in 1827.
