Sir Hugh Gough, first Viscount, became a Major General in 1830 and received the GCB for the capture of the Canton forts in 1841 and became a baronet in 1842. He is said to have commanded in more general actions than any other British officer in the 19th century, except the Duke of Wellington. On 1 March 1861, Gough became the first non-royal knight to receive the Order from the Queen.
