Located on Battery Path just above Queen's Road, the site for this building was acquired by the first Administrator of Hong Kong, Alexander Johnston. The mansion was built in 1843 and was the residence of the first Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Henry Pottinger. It was offered for sale to the government but they failed to agree with the excessive valuation of $13,000. The house was ultimately sold to Augustine Heard and Company and was significantly remodelled in the 1870s and 1880s.
