中國畫派 約一八三零年 澳門內港 布面油畫 裝框

Provenance: Francisco Hipolito Raposo
Martyn Gregory, London, acquired May 2000

Published, Illustrated and Exhibited Martyn Gregory, In The Wake Of The Indiaman, catalogue 76, Hong Kong and London, Summer 2000, no. 63.

This unusual and detailed view of the Inner Harbour, on the west side of the peninsula of Macau shows Spanish and Portuguese shops alongside Chinese junks. The presence of the church of Saint Paulo, which was destroyed in a fire of 1835, helps to date the painting. On the far right is the temple of A-Ma (or Ma-Kok) from which the name 'Macau' is derived.
