From the Collection of Valery and Richard Garrett (Lots 501-516)

Valery Garrett was a noted expert on Chinese clothing and published widely on the subject including the titles Chinese Clothing published by Chinese University Press, China in 1994 and Chinese Dress published by Tuttle in 2007. Her book on Canton Heaven is High, the Emperor Far Away was published by Oxford University Press China Limited. Her collection of Hong Kong New Territories clothing is held at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Richard Garrett worked as an engineer in Hong Kong for thirty years and has been a member of the Arms and Armour Society, the Ordnance Society and the Society for Army Historical Research. He published a number of books including The Defences of Macau published in 2010 by the Hong Kong University Press.

This view of Praya Grande, as seen from the West stretches all the way from Panha Hill and convent on the left, to Fort Monte on the right, with the Artillery Barracks, which were completed in 1873, helping to date the painting. The oil lamps for public lighting which can be seen on the point of the bay were installed in 1871.
