A Siegburg stoneware jug (Schnelle), last quarter 16th century

Decorated with a quartered version of the arms of France and Navarre flanked by heraldic lions and the letters I K, below a panel with a kneeling figure being anointed, the sides with panels depicting large figures, one with a knight and the inscription DER EDELE RITTER FAN...(?) 1577, above the double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, the other side with a lady and the inscription DER GHELOF, above the date ANNO DO/MINI 1552, 23.6cm high (minor chips to footrim)

Footnotes

The use of the arms of France and Navarre may suggest that the central panel depicts the anointment of Henry IV of France, who was also King of Navarre from 1572 (as Henry III).
