A Siegburg stoneware pweter-mounted jug (Zylinderhalskrug), probably by the workshop of Christian Knütgen, late 16th century

Decorated in relief with dense Arabesque-style bands around the neck and body consisting of a bearded mascaron, scrolling foliage, flowers, birds and squirrels, the shoulder with a Kerbschnitt border, 25.5cm high (some chips to rim and haircrack to base)

Footnotes

It is likely that the Arabesque-style bands are after prints by Virgil Solis (1514-1562), often used by the workshop of Christian Knütgen in their designs.

A similar jug is illustrated in Ingeborg Unger, Die Kunst des deutschen Steinzeugs, Collection Karl und Petra Amendt und der Krefelder Kunstmuseen, 2013, p. 104, no. 76. Several Tüllenkannen attributed to the workshop of Christian Knütgen and with Arabesque-style relief borders are in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Cologne, illustrated in Gisela Reineking-von Bock, Steinzeug, Kunstgewerbemuseum der Stadt Köln, 1971, nos. 224 - 226.
