A pair of small Meissen obelisks, circa 1750

Probably modelled by J.G. Ehder, two sides moulded with musical trophies embellished in gilding and enamels, the remaining sides and the pedestals painted with flower sprigs within gilt line borders, surmounted by a gilt ball, 15.5cm high, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue (one ball finial restored) (2)

Footnotes

Johann Gottlieb Ehder's work records for July 1744 include "1 Pyramide nebst einem Postament mit Füllungen von Thon neu bohsirt." The first delivery of Meissen figures to the Saxon court pantry (Hofkonditorei) in 1744 included 56 obelisks; see M. Cassidy-Geiger, "Von Zucker und Silber zum Porzellan: Die Konditorei und die öffentliche Tafel in Dresden unter August III.", Keramos 198 (2007): 32. The 1753 inventory of porcelain in Count Brühl's pantry also records numerous 'pyramids' on pedestals (published in U. Pietsch (ed.), Schwanenservice, 2000, p. 234).
