A rare Meissen mounted tea kettle with hunting scenes, circa 1763-1774

The round body decorated with a continuous scene of a stag hunt, Dalmatian hounds surrounding the animal, the handle and spout moulded in relief picked out in gilt with pink blossoms, gilt strapwork to the rim, the cover with an apple finial and hunting vignettes, 29cm high, incised crossed swords and dot mark, impressed numerals (cover with haircracks) (2)

Footnotes

The hunting scenes are based on the prints based on the drawings of Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767) of Die Par Force Jagd eines Hirschen und deren ganzer Vorgang mit Ausführlicher Beschreibung (Augsburg, 1756), a series of 16 engravings which became an instant success and were widely distributed through Europe. The use of hunting scenes on Meissen porcelain is described at some length in U. Pietsch (ed.), Porzellan Parforce, 2005.
