A Meissen oval basket, circa 1740

Probably modelled by J.J. Kaendler, the exterior moulded in basket weave pattern, the handles with mask terminals emblematic of the Four Seasons, the interior decorated in Kakiemon style with scattered Asiatic blooms and hay bales in red, gilt, blue and sea-green, 27.5cm long x 13.6cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, impressed "33" to inside foot rim, (small chips to mask)

Footnotes

The model is first mentioned in Kaendler's work records for November 1733, though it probably predates this entry and likely was already made in three sizes; see J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbilden, II, 2013, pp. 188f., for a discussion of the model.
