Footnotes

Caroline and Henry were the children of George Vansittart (1745–1825) of Bisham Abbey, Berkshire. Caroline married Augustus Henry East in 1792 aged 20. Henry joined the Royal Navy in 1788 and rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral in 1841.

A drawing for a posthumous enamel by Henry Bone of the children's mother Sarah Vansittart (née Stonhouse) is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (inv. NPG D17650). There is no drawing for the present lot but the counter-enamel inscription states that it is after a painting by John Russell.
