A Sèvres cup and saucer (gobelet litron et soucoupe) painted by Dodin, with the head of a Gorgon, circa 1796-97

Painted with the head of a Gorgon in profile, inscribed Gorgone. in black, the saucer with a trophy consisting of a spear surrounded by coiling snakes forming facial features and applied with wings, surrounded by a tooled gilt band flanked with gilt motifs with scrolls and anthemia, gilt classical borders at the rims, the cup: 7.3cm high; the saucer: 15.1cm diam., Sévres and uu for the period September 1796-September 1797 in blue, painter's mark k for Charles-Nicolas Dodin, incised marks (restoration to cup) (2)
