Footnotes

The plate originates from a service acquired between 1793 and 1794. During this period, several comparable services were listed in the sale records, composed of pieces produced between 1791 and 1795; see David Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services, vol. V, 2015, nos. 94-1, 94-12 and 95-4.

The decoration on these services was inspired by illustrations by François Nicolas Martinet for the Histoire naturelle des oiseaux by the comte de Buffon, published in ten volumes between 1770 and 1786.
